WELCOME TO SAN MIGUEL WALK FOR CASA 2008
A Walk Against Domestic Violence

You can hear the sound from far away-the unmistakable heartbeat of thousands of people walking together, too disorganized for an army, too syncopated for strangers. The cadence is gradual, persistent, an awesome strolling soundtrack to one of Mexico's most significant and physically grueling pilgrimages.

On January 24, 2008, thousands of the faithful will set off on a nine-day walk through the high desert of central Mexican state of Guanajuato, starting from the historic town of San Miguel de Allende and winding up more than a week later at the Basilica de San Juan de los Lagos, the second most famous church in Mexico. You will visit our Lady of San Juan de Los Lagos famous for her miracles since 1642.
This annual pilgrimage is a testament to faith and tradition that brings together walkers from all classes of society, from all the states of the Republic. They walk in sandals, sneakers, hiking shoes, or barefoot. They range from extended clans living in tiny villages to inner-city residents of Mexico's megalopolis. No matter where they come from, all are walking simply to make a statement before their God.

There will be walkers from the last years and a new group of enthusiasts, joining the pilgrims. They are a small assembly of men and women, residents and tourists alike, who will be accompanying the pilgrimage for a ONE DAY WALK of 10 miles to raise funds for CASA´s Violence Prevention Program.
San Miguel Walk for CASA is open to all participants who have raised a minimum of $100 US for the ONE DAY WALK in donations for CASA’s program to prevent domestic violence. In a break with the standard percentages given by many charity-based marathons, San Miguel Walk for CASA has pledged that 100% of all funds raised will go to the beneficiary-CASA (Centro para los Adolescentes de San Miguel de Allende A.C.), a twenty-five-year-old low-income family health NGO that introduced one of the first local domestic violence programs.

If you can not join us as a Pilgrim Walker and you still want to participate in sprit, sponsor a local Mexican walker who has always dreamed of making this incredible pilgrimage and contribute even more to eliminating domestic violence.

Like their fellow trekkers, the walkers are marching toward a better world, one in which domestic violence is unacceptable, inexcusable, unforgivable. They are walking in an effort to raise consciousness about domestic violence, both in Mexico and abroad, in the hope that their physical testament will be a statement that envisions a safer future for all.

The ONE DAY WALK is open to anyone who wants to experience the incredible energy and spirit of joining the thousands of pilgrims starting out at San Miguel’s Jardin. ONE-DAY WALKERS can walk the distance of their choice and ability. San Miguel Walk for CASA will be supported by a road crew which will include medical and meal services. A SAG vehicle will be available to the walkers.
